In countries of Islamic tradition, this small building indicates the tomb of a pious figure. ![]() The KubaĪt the same time, the construction of a kuba at the cemetery was decided in order to honour the fallen Muslim soldiers. On both sides, the names of the great battles are engraved in stone: Argonne, Somme, Marne, Verdun… A list of soldiers who died for France is later engraved on a plaque affixed to a wall of the Saint-Saturnin church. The inscription “À nos Poilus” honors those who have experienced the horror of the trenches. The monument arrived at Nogent-Le Perreux station in April 1924, and was inaugurated in October. Completely revised, it finally represents a Victory personified in a young woman brandishing her helmet towards the sky. The original project, a wounded soldier and a grave, showed war in all its cruelty. In its centre, the image of victorious France, wearing the Phrygian cap, shelters with its arms wide open the names of the many Nogentans who fell for the Nation. A wall section punctuated by pilasters whose capitals evoke the bulbs of Orthodox churches, it combines strength and sobriety. In 1921, the cemetery monument was completed. The execution was entrusted to Charles Billot, a sculptor-statuary from Nogent, who was also in charge of creating a war memorial for the cemetery. In 1919, shortly after the armistice was signed, the Nogent City Council decided, on the initiative of Mayor Emile Brisson, to organize a public subscription to erect a monument dedicated to the Poilus square in Estienne d’Orves. The nurse and several doctors and orderlies worked here, tending to the wounded. Soldiers wounded in the Battle of Verdun were brought here for surgery and recovery. The Verdun military hospital was a makeshift French medical center in Verdun, converted from a large ornate building, possibly a church. ![]()
